Risks of Myopia
Separate the risks associated with myopia from the risks of a particular treatment. Both deserve discussion before starting overnight lenses.
Risk Factor 1: Education
Long periods of close work and limited outdoor time are associated with myopia. These associations do not mean schoolwork alone causes every case or that a habit change can replace treatment.
Risk Factor 2: Use of Screens
Screens are one form of near work. Breaks, comfortable viewing distance and suitable lighting can support comfort, but they do not guarantee that established myopia will stop progressing.
Risk Factor 3: Genetics
Family history and younger age at onset help inform assessment of progression risk. Regular examinations are useful even when a child appears to cope well without reporting blur.
