Myopia Control Sydney

Myopia is a vision disorder that affects your ability to see distant objects clearly. Also known as short-sightedness or near-sightedness, myopia is more prevalent than ever in our modern world. This is due – in large part – to the time children spend in front of televisions and computer screens.

Myopia control is the process of slowing down the progression of myopia or preventing further short-sightedness altogether. At Smart Vision Optometry, we offer myopia control in Sydney for children, adolescents, and adults, utilising orthokeratology to slow progression.

Myopia Treatment Lens

Orthokeratology involves wearing Ortho-K lenses overnight. By wearing these myopia treatment lenses during sleep, patients can reshape their corneas and enjoy clear vision all day without the need for further correction.

The primary aim of orthokeratology treatment in adults is to enjoy clear vision without the aid of glasses or contact lenses. However, recent research has shown that corneal reshaping can also have a positive effect on children and adolescents who undergo the treatment.

A 2018 study published in the Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology found that myopic progression slowed in patients aged 7-13 who wore Ortho-K lenses overnight. Research published by BMC Ophthalmology also found that overnight orthokeratology was effective in slowing myopia progression, and this was supported over a twelve-year follow-up period.

This new research shows promise for the use of orthokeratology for myopia control. Our team can provide parents with advice on the appropriateness of treatment for their children.

Ortho-K lenses must be worn nightly in order to achieve consistent results and more effective myopia control. Orthokeratology is recommended for patients who are looking for an alternative to glasses, daytime contact lenses, or a single treatment “fix” such as laser eye surgery.

Ortho-K is a myopia treatment lens, rather than an aid, such as single-focus distance glasses or contact lenses. Unlike these aids, Ortho-K has a positive effect on vision even when not in use.
